Tiki Bar Themed Room Hand Painted Murals
|
 Three
of the 5 mural areas are primarily planters with plants. One mural,
located at the foot of the stairs, is a trompe l’oil of a path leading
out to the beach. The other mural that isn’t plants, is the beach
scene, which is framed by curtains so that it appears to be outside of
the pool room. |
The following photos are of several murals done in a
basement tiki bar theme room located in
Westfield,
Mass.
Painting the plants on the walls allows for a more
cohesive look than just covering the walls with pictures. The dark
brown wall paint was chosen because the ceiling consisted of brown
basement rafters/wiring, and that was not going to be changed. Because
your eye is drawn to color, the rafters and walls are not what you focus
on in this space. You focus on the murals, which are pretty much
everywhere. Another benefit of painted plants is that the “plants”
don’t intrude into the space which is limited due to the many functions
the owner wanted, such as a pool table, laundry facilities, bar, poker
table and sitting area. Wall murals are an excellent solution where
space is tight. They tend to visually expand the space depending on
colors. The painted plants also provide a richer more layered look as a
backdrop for the owner’s silk plants. The room now has a little
“tropical garden” in the corner. The painted plants are also difficult
to kill, a benefit that can’t be overlooked by some of us. Some of the
plants that were painted into this space are calathea makoyana, canna
durban, caladium, purple
bananas, canna de imbe, indian kale, cacti and spider plants.
The basement support columns have been added to, and
sculpted to imitate bamboo posts. They no longer have that steel look
basement jacks usually have. Most basements, especially in older homes,
do have these columns, and they are difficult to disguise in any manner
that makes you feel better about them once you’ve done the work. You
can purchase covers online, but after shipping, these can run you
hundreds of dollars per pole.
The entire room is done rather tongue-in-cheek. It was
more about creating a fun environment to entertain and amuse, than to
depict images with unwavering accuracy.

 The floor
is a medium shade of yellow to brighten the room, and imitate sand. The
same yellow works it’s way up into one of the murals which contains a
dubious beach scene with a mom lounging on a pool floatie enjoying her
quiet time |

 The faux
bamboo treatment shown here, is very believable on the columns and they
now read as wood instead of steel. The cost for the artwork on
basement support poles as shown here is approximately $20 per pole, but
could vary due to distance from us because the job does require work on
two different days, a significant savings over buying pole covers. |

History of Wall Murals
From the prehistoric cave painting in Lascaux, France to
the murals in cathedrals throughout Europe to the graffiti art scene in
New York City, art on walls portray a story or convey a message to the
spectators. Murals have been a medium to display an idea, enhance the
space or unite a theme in room decor. |
